Community Partnership’s Anne and Marie met with Gartocharn resident Fiona Wylie at the Millennium Hall to chat about her prestigious ‘Civic Champion’ Scottish Civic Trust My Place Award 2017.
The Millennium Hall was the perfect setting to meet the lady nominated by the Kilmaronock Community Council for her drive and commitment in helping to develop what is currently the villages focal community point.
The Millennium hall was built following five years of community consultation, development and fundraising by the residents of Gartocharn in conjunction with the Millennium Commission. Fiona recalls that the idea to develop a hall came from a more-spiritual nature following an encounter with a fortune teller predicting her involvement.
However. Fiona adds that there was more to it than that. The existing church building in the village was slowly deteriorating and unfit for purpose for its growing and younger community. With the girls sewing club and boys softball group needing somewhere more adequate, as well as a place for everyone to meet and socialise, the community came together with the plan to fundraise, design and build a hall in time for its Millennium celebrations grand opening!
A special feature of the hall greets you as you enter into the main reception area. An intricate mosaic stretching the full width of the wall tells a story of the four seasons, with tiny handprints of the children that helped to create it!
Now into it’s 17th year, the hall is thriving with activity and is used for wedding events, health and wellbeing classes, and the famous Friday Coffee Mornings which attracts over 100 people with regular visitors from Arrochar, Helensburgh and Balfron. No trip to the coffee morning would be complete without a trip next door to Frances Farm to buy your local fruit and veg!
On Sat 4 November the Millennium Hall will be the venue for this year’s Community Partnership Gathering and Community Champion Awards. The event will have a distinctive heritage theme and CP members and guests will have a chance to meet the amazing team of volunteers that keep the hall running, and enjoy the fantastic views across Loch Lomond.
